<\/a><\/p>\nHaunting Megan<\/strong><\/p>\n Romantic Suspense by Rebecca Reilly<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n I wrote and published Haunting Megan <\/strong>in 2014, but the inspiration for the story began over forty years ago.<\/p>\n My mother was an abusive alcoholic, and many of the events of the opening chapters came from my childhood.\u00a0 I woke one night to my mother standing above me with a chef\u2019s knife in her hand.\u00a0 When I was twelve, I visited her in a mental facility where she was confined after she attempted suicide.\u00a0\u00a0 Those days and nights definitely sparked the beginning ideas for Haunting Megan.<\/p>\n Megan comes from me more than any other character I\u2019ve written.\u00a0 Her insecurities, her brokenness, and her need to protect are qualities that grew from the abuse in my childhood.\u00a0 As with Megan, the love of a good man helped me see my value, accept my flaws, and grow into the woman I was created to be.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Summary<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n After suffering years of abuse at the hands of her alcoholic mother, Megan wakes to screams, cries of murder, and the room splattered with blood.\u00a0 Sent to the mountains to live with the grandfather who\u2019d once abandoned them, Megan must learn to care for her young sisters and manage Wind Hollow Lodge.\u00a0 Megan tries to ignore the haunting memories of her past as she struggles to live a normal life.\u00a0 But she can\u2019t ignore the ghosts who terrorize her, nor can she calm the fear that her sanity is slipping away. When deputies discover the bodies of men murdered on Wind Hollow land, people start to wonder just how crazy Megan Wilson really is.<\/p>\n The investigation at Wind Hollow Lodge is just another case to Deputy Jason Belt\u2014until he sees Megan. \u00a0Drawn to her beauty and her wounded spirit, his oath to protect and serve takes on new meaning. \u00a0But why did she lie to him? \u00a0What does she have to hide?<\/p>\n Excerpt<\/strong><\/p>\n Chapter Nine<\/em><\/p>\n The summer season began, and in one week the lodge went from vacant to filled to capacity.\u00a0 Megan pushed the vacuum up and down the hallway.\u00a0 She cleaned each of the fifteen rooms herself.\u00a0 Everyday.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t want to admit it to anyone, but she liked it.\u00a0 Before, in San Jose, she didn\u2019t clean.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t know how.\u00a0 Jessica did all the housework and whatever cooking needed to be done.\u00a0 Here she had an important job, one she could take pride in.\u00a0 Cleaning rooms meant something to the success of the lodge, and she put her heart into it.<\/p>\n It had taken Megan a month to get comfortable at Wind Hollow Lodge.\u00a0 Her grandfather was a man of few words, and those words more often than not came out sounding like a growl.\u00a0 But he was solid.\u00a0 She\u2019d never seen him lose control.\u00a0 He did his duty to the lodge and for them.\u00a0 Megan didn\u2019t love him, but she felt safe with him.\u00a0 Safe was very good.<\/p>\n She wound the cord around the vacuum and took it to the storage closet across from her room.\u00a0 The smell of french fries made her stomach hurt.\u00a0 Damn Zoe, Wind Hollow\u2019s cook, for leaving them on the Lodge menu.\u00a0 She had not been able to eat fries since the night Jessica died.\u00a0 The smell alone brought the vision flashing in her head of Jessica handing her a bag.\u00a0 But in Megan\u2019s visions, Jessica\u2019s hand was covered in blood.<\/p>\n Megan unlocked her bedroom door and pushed it open.\u00a0 She thought she\u2019d find Emily eating off a plate she\u2019d snuck from the kitchen and was prepared to discipline her wayward sister.<\/p>\n She faced her dead sister instead.<\/p>\n Megan grabbed the doorway to keep from falling.\u00a0 Her body shaking, Megan tried to speak or scream.\u00a0 Nothing.<\/p>\n Jessica smiled and gestured with her arm.\u00a0 \u201cThis used to be my room.\u201d<\/p>\n Jessica\u2019s features looked washed out like an overexposed photograph.\u00a0 She wore a flowing white nightgown splattered with blood.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s here.\u00a0 She\u2019s here. \u00a0She\u2019s here,\u201d sliced like a sharp blade through Megan\u2019s head.\u00a0 The need to run out of the room and slam the door warred with the need to run in and hold Jessica to keep her close.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter that the urge to run was stronger; her legs wouldn\u2019t move.\u00a0 Megan\u2019s fingers dug into the doorjamb splintering both her nails and the old wood.<\/p>\n Jessica took a step closer to Megan.\u00a0 She lowered her chin and her eyes sparked.\u00a0 \u201cDo you know who sliced me up, Little Sister?\u00a0 I was protecting you, and now I\u2019m dead.\u201d<\/p>\n Megan\u2019s brain couldn\u2019t form thoughts, much less words.\u00a0 Her ears rang and lights spiraled around her eyes.\u00a0 She felt herself slipping away from the wall, away from everything.<\/p>\n \u201cMegan,\u201d Sarah tugged the back of Megan\u2019s shirt.\u00a0 Her younger sister\u2019s touch shot adrenaline through Megan\u2019s body, jolting her back to consciousness.\u00a0 She must protect Sarah from whatever, whoever, was in their room.<\/p>\n Megan spun and screamed, too frightened to be gentle.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n Sarah backed up, startled and nearly as frightened as Megan.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 I just\u2026\u201d Sarah\u2019s lip quivered and a tear slid out.<\/p>\n Megan took a jagged breath and opened her arms to her little sister.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sorry, baby.\u00a0 You scared me and I screamed.\u201d\u00a0 She held her a moment, aware enough to block Sarah\u2019s view of the room and of Jessica.\u00a0 \u201cWhat did you need?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s time for lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n Megan nodded.\u00a0 \u201cGo on down.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be right there.\u201d<\/p>\n Megan waited until Sarah turned the corner on the stairs before she turned around.\u00a0 Jessica was gone.<\/p>\n Rebecca Reilly is a pastor and has worked in ministry for over thirty years.
